Ashton second half blitz fails to unlock the Fylde defence.
Despite a second half onslaught of the Fylde goal by Ashton, forcing Fylde keeper Summerfield into 3 breathtaking saves and sevral good stops the visitors held on and following a first half strike from Wane, finished the job with two late goals from Allen and an own goal in the dyeing minutes of the match to take the all three points from Brocstedes Park .
A lively first half saw both sides fighting for supremecy andthe first chance fell to Ashton's Steve Bennett who was denied by a superbly timed last ditch tackle by Martin Moran as Bennett bore down on the Fylde goal. A series of corners for Ashton caused unease in the visitors back line but a clear sight of goal was hard to come by with Mark Court coming closest, firing over the top from the edge of the box after a corner.
Fylde got into their stride with a number of slick passing moves asking questions of the Ashton defence. A well worked throw in in the 23rd minute resulted in a pin point cross by full back Martin Moran, finding Phil Blackwell at the far post to head back across goal for Mark Wane to smash the ball home for his sixth goal of the season.
The remainder of the half had both sides producing fast flowing football but both defences held firm.
HT 0-1
The second half was an entirely different affair as Ashton learned from the previous week's game against Newcastle raisning their game from the off and dominating for a 30 minute spell with Fylde struggling to get out of their own half.
A series of near misses for Ashton started with Steve Bennettt volleying the ball towards the top corner from 12 yards only to be denied by the finger tips of keeper Summerfield in the 49th minute. From the resulting corner a blatant handball inside the box was missed by referee and his assistantand despite the protests of players and crowd play was waved on.
A long throw 5 minutes later fell to Dave Sherlock who drove the ball low and hard towards the bottom but yet another full length save from Summerfield prevented the equaliser. In the 58th minute similar effort from Paul Townshend received the same treatment from Summerfield, turning that effort away for one of many second half corners for Ashton.
Ashton's set pieces were causing panic in the Fylde back line and Ashton had two more shouts for penalties as Chris Lawton was pulled to the ground on separate occasions, and in the last of which he also received an elbow in the face for his troubles. Again the officials remained unmoved by the protests.
On 63 minutes great work by Townshend as his cross found Sherlock 10 yards out and the powerful header flashed wide. Fresh legs were introduced by Ashton which maintained their momentum and Sherlock went close again with a snap shot from a wide position which for once beat Summerfield but also flew inches wide of the upright.
Fylde attacks had all but petered out with supply to Patterson and Wane well and truly stunted so much so that Walwyn and Allen were introduced to liven things up. As time ran out for Ashton caution was thrown to the wind and direct play to centre half /now striker Lawton became the order of the day. The Fylde defence stood firm with Thompson outstanding, and even when Ashton got behind them Summerfield was on hand to deny Hynes and then Lawton late in the game.
Despite almost constant pressure and with the home defence short on numbers the counter attacks started to give Fylde some respite. Allen almost increased the lead forcing Ashton keeper Brobbin into an excellent save before suppltying a great cross that Walwyn headed wide. Then after a break down the left an Allen cross hit recovering defender Mike Burke and rested in the back of the net in the 89th minute to secure the points for Fylde.
Not willing to give up the fight Ashton continued to pour forward striving for a consolation. However from another swift counter attack and seconds from the end Allen broke free again to give Fylde a more than flattering 3-0 scoreline but more importantly the three points that moves them up to third spot and leaves Ashton wondering what might have been.
