Cup exit for Ashton U 17's
Sunday 9th November 2008
Southport Vulcan U/17 - 5 Ashton Athletic U/17 - 1
Divisional Cup Match
Even with the appalling weather conditions Ashton could have no complaints about the score line as Southport started the game brighter, played better football and wanted to win.
Southport went into an early lead, and soon made it 2-0 when a lack of communication between Ashton’s keeper and defence gifted them another goal. Just before half time Ashton had a couple of chances to get back in to the game but somehow managed to not to score an occurrence that has been apparent throughout the season, and something that needs urgent rectification. H/T 2-0
Ashton failed to respond to the challenge in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half were soon 4-0 down, with too many players not performing, and the work rate and effort that was so in evidence at the start the season was absent.
Ashton did get a consolation goal back when Josh Taffe got in behind the Southport defence and finished well, but another lapse from our defensive duties saw Southport score a fifth goal late in the game. FT 5-1
So that’s 2 defeats on the bounce for Ashton who urgently need to rediscover the early season work rate and commitment especially when not in possession AND convert chances into goals.
