Sherlock strike earns Ashton a point

VODKAT LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

TUESDAY 18TH NOVEMBER 2008

ASHTON ATHLETIC 1 CONGLETON TOWN 1

Ashton fought out a hard earned point on a heavy pitch against a strong Congleton Town team, currently well placed in 5th position in the Vodkat Premier League.

A 6th minute strike from Ashton’s Dave Sherlock was due reward for a first half performance by Ashton which saw the home side play some of the best football of the season so far.

Congleton got back into the match early in the second half as free scoring Stuart Tulloch punished a moments slack marking in the Ashton box, coolly slotting the ball passed keeper Joe Brobbin.

Unfortunately persistent infringement by Congleton prevented Ashton from getting into the same groove as in the first 45 minutes, and also affected the game as a spectacle with the need for constant restarts.

Ashton were however unfortunate to be denied a late winner as sub Tom Potter latched on to a 60 yard long ball down the left flank, cut inside and drove a shot in to the top corner of the goal, only to be pulled back for a dubious offside flag.

Ashton continue a hectic period of the season with a trip to Ramsbottom United’s Riverside ground on Saturday, 3pm KO. Meanwhile the reserve team entertain local rivals Atherton LR Reserves.
