BOXING DAY BONANZA FOR ASHTON

ASHTON ATHELTIC 5 ST HELENS 0

Ashton Athletic produced a 5 star performance to see off local rivals St Helens Town in the Boxing Day Derby at Brocstedes Park.

From the first minute Ashton took control and should have been awarded a penalty with the first attack as Dave Sherlock was up ended in the box when clear through on goal but referee Johnson waved play on, to everyone’s amazement.

The reprieve for Saints was short lived as in the 10th minute a superb free kick by Mike Rhead found Chris Lawton on the edge of the six yard box who flicked the ball across the keeper into the net.

Two minutes later Sherlock was again fouled in the box by another clumsy challenge, but this time the referee pointed to the spot. Steve Wallace stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way and increase Ashton’s lead.

St Helens were chasing shadows as Ashton’s slick passing and movement continued to probe for a third goal. This came in the 28th minute when a 6 pass move starting with an incisive break through midfield by Joe Evans was moved onto Dave Sherlock on the left wing. Sherlock beat his man and delivered a pin point cross to the back post where Neil Davies had stolen in beyond the last defender and who showed great composure by lobbing the keeper with a first time shot from 12 yards to give the home side the 3 goal cushion at half time.

St Helens made it more of match in the second half, spurred on by hard working skipper Tom Sumner who never gave up the ghost despite the score line. Ashton’s defence were in ruthless mood however, and any sight at goal was quickly snubbed out, giving keeper Brobbin a quiet afternoon.

Fresh legs were introduced by Ashton and this brought instant reward as Adam White latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the box and his volley deceived Kevin Woods in the Saints goal, and the ball slipped through his hands and into the empty net after 75 minutes.

Ashton’s fifth fell to Chris Lawton in the dyeing minutes, who picked up on another goalkeeping error by Woods, who misjudged a cross from Steve Wallace with Paul Hynes in attendance. The loose ball flicked on to Lawton unmarked to get his second of the match, and third goal in two games.

A great performance by the ‘latics and a result, the third win on the bounce, moves the team up to 9th place in the league and sets things up nicely for the New Year. Before that however, the team must prepare for a Coop Lancashire Cup match at Ramsbottom United on Tuesday 30th December 2008, 7.45pm KO
