Ashton got off to great start at Flixton on Saturday when in the first minute a Steve Rothwell long throw was helped on by Chris Lawton and volleyed acrobatically into the back of the net by striker Paul Prescott.
However Flixton were soon on level terms as Chris Smith diverted a speculative shot from Ricco Coulo beyond Ashton keeper Joe Brobbin after 10 minutes.
Referee Price then took centre stage issuing a flurry of yellow cards for incidents that were no more than fouls perpetrated by committed players from both sides. Then in the 40th minute Mr Price brandished a straight red card at Flixton’s Craig Brennan for bad language direct at the official thereby reducing the home side to ten men.
As half time approached, a foul on Paul Prescott just outside the box resulted in an Ashton free kick, which Chris Lawton despatched into the top corner of the goal to give Ashton the half time lead.

The opening exchanges saw Ashton dominate possession making good use of the numerical advantage however in the 52nd minute a break down the Flixton right wing by Brian Matthews saw Ashton’s Dave Sherlock tracking back to force the wing man wide. With the danger having seemingly been averted Sherlock challenged for the ball and played it away for a corner, or so he thought. Unfortunately for Ashton referee Price deemed the challenge to be a foul and pointed to the penalty spot. Chris Smith stepped up to score the spot kick and evened up the score.
Minutes later a Flixton break down the middle saw Ashton’s Lee Edmunds in a tangle with Striker Warren Dickenson. Despite this being only his second foul of the game the referee once again reached prematurely for a yellow card, which happened to be Edmund’s second of the game and so Ashton were also reduced to ten men.
Neither side really exploited the extra space created by the reduced numbers, however late chances for Ashton in the dyeing minutes could have snatched all the points. First Paul Prescott and then Neil Davies both failed to take advantage of loose ball in the Flixton penalty area and the determined Flixton defence held on to take a share of the spoils.
Ashton’s reserves were also back in action for their first league match since 6th December and gaols from Adam Morris and a late equalising strike from Paul Townshend gave them a well deserved point against Glossop North end in a 2-2 draw.
Next Saturday Ashton entertain Silsden FC at Brocstedes Park whilst the reserves travel to AFC Fylde, both 3pm Kick Offs.
