Late equaliser denies Ashton

Saturday 14th February 2009
Vodkat League Premier Division
Newcastle Town 2 Ashton Athletic 2

After last weekend’s match postponement due to frost Ashton Athletic returned to action and travelled to second place Newcastle producing a committed performance which in the end earned a well deserved point.

The game got off to the worst possible start for Ashton however as in the second minute a Newcastle corner was poorly defended at the near post and the ball found its way through to Jordan Johnson who made no mistake from close range.

Ashton’s response was instant as good play down the right saw Steve Bennett cut in and curl a left footed shot towards goal, and with Newcastle keeper Read distracted by the onrushing Paul Prescott the effort squeezed into the bottom corner to equalise in the 4th minute.

Ashton took the lead in the 43rd minute as Steve Bennett again broke down the right and whipped in an inviting cross that Paul Prescott slotted home.

The second half was dominated by title chasing Newcastle who poured forward for the equaliser but the Ashton defence was in resilient mood and even when Newcastle did manage a sight at goal the alert and assured Joe Brobbin kept his goal well protected.

Despite Newcastle’s territorial advantage Ashton always looked dangerous on the break with Bennett, Prescott, Sherlock and Evans always a threat. However the pressure finally told on the Ashton defence in the 86th minute as former England Youth international Dorryl Proffitt set off on a maisy run beat 2 would be tacklers to break through the Ashton back line and then a third mistimed challenge up ended the tricky striker inside the box.

Referee Smallwood had no hesitation to rightly award the penalty and Jordan Johnson stepped up to convert the spot kick to give his side a share of the spoils, despite the best efforts of Ashton keeper Joe Brobbin.

The point moves Ashton up to 7th place in the league and will continue with league action on Tuesday 17th February as Runcorn Linnets visit Brocstedes Park in a 7.45pm Kick off. Then on Saturday another away trip to Bacup Borough for a 3pm kick off.

Ashton’s second string came out on top in the local derby with Ashton Town Reserves, with goals from Adam Morris and Mike Rhead sealing the win that moves them up to 4th place in the league, and extends the team’s unbeaten run to 9 games. Next weekend the Reserves are again at home to Irlam Town.
