Narrow victory for Under 17's

ASHTON ATHLETIC UNDER 17's 1 SPRING VIEW UNDER 17's 0

Ashton Athletic v Spring View Athletic is always a closely fought match and today’s game was no different.

On a very cold morning it was Ashton who started the brightest; from the 1st minute we looked ‘to be up for it’ and got the ball down on the floor and started to play some neat football.
After a couple of early exchanges in the opening 10 minutes Ashton finally got the upper hand and a great thru ball to the Ashton striker ended up with the Spring View centre half giving away a free kick just inside his own half. Tom Starr sent a great ball into the penalty area, and with Adam Brown and Martin Latham causing unrest in their defence the ball fell kindly to Jake Leyland, who from a tight angle hit a lovely half volley into the bottom corner 1-0.
This prompted Spring View into action and to their credit they had a good 20 minute spell with lots of possession However with Ross Sheppard in fine form at the back they couldn’t penetrate the Ashton defence.
With both midfield and defences of both side on top it was hard to create any clear cut chances, but with half time approaching Adam Brown and Tom Starr interchanged passes on the edge of the box, with Browny about to pull the trigger the Spring View defender made a very good challenge and cleared the danger. H/T 1-0

The start of the 2nd half was a repeat of the 1st with both teams not giving much away, Ashton looked very solid defensively and the midfield were working there socks off.
From a Spring View corner the centre forward had a free header inside the six yard box, but somehow sent it straight into our goalkeeper’s hands.
Spring View started to push for an equaliser and had another couple of half chances but with Anthony Burns in good form we kept them at bay.
As Spring View pressed forward Ashton started started to hit them on the counter attack, with Jake Leyland, Adam Brown and Connor Callian all having chances to score but with a mix of bad finishing and good goalkeeping Ashton failed to kill the game off.
With minutes to go Spring View had another chance to score but once again Burns made a good save. With time running out Ashton dug in and despite tired legs the team concentrated well on keeping the ball, and finally after a couple of minutes of added on time the referee brought the game to a close. F/T 1-0

Both sets of players played their part today in a very tight and hard fought game, reflecting on the performance Ashton did just enough to win the game,.
