Under 17's post another win in difficult conditions at Formby
FORMBY UNDER 17/S - 0
ASHTON ATHLETIC UNDER 17/S -2
After last week’s important victory against Spring View, Ashton Athletic had another tough game against 2nd placed Formby on Sunday. The condition of the pitch was only just playable after another overnight frost but both teams got on with it
Ashton started very brightly with everyone getting an early touch to settle the nerve’s, but knew they couldn’t play the usual passing game on what was a mud bath of a pitch, made worse by snow coming down 10 minutes after kick off!
A direct approach was the only game to play which Ashton did well, making use of the pace of the wingers. On 15 minutes Josh Taff broke through the Formby defence only to be denied by the alert goalkeeper, and another burst of pace saw Taff go past a couple of defenders and into the box, a neat pass to the on rushing Tom Starr who somehow from 5 yards out completely missed the ball and the danger was cleared.
With Adam Brown using his strength to great affect he muscled his way through the Formby defence and narrowly shot wide. Ashton were well on top and surely it was only a matter of time before scoring. From another attack the Formby keeper was tested again but he was having a good game.
As half-time approached it was Formby who started to come into the game, forcing Ashton to give away couple of needless free kicks. These could have resulted in a Formby goal but the defence cleard the danger.
Back out for the 2nd half and the pitch was white, the snow was now falling heavy. Formby continued were they had left off in the first half creating a couple of half chances, but Ashton defenders Shaun Davis, Ross Sheppard & Daniel Ferguson all stood firm,
Ashton’s midfield starting got a grip of the game again and a defence splitting pass put Josh Taff one on one with the goal keeper, with a good 1st touch he rolled the ball into the bottom corner to open the scoring.1-0.
Formby upped the tempo and for 20 minutes dominated the game, a number of corners and a couple of shots tested our goalkeeper, but failed to bring reward and with time running out Formby pushed everybody forward.
In doing so Ashton hit them on the break and with 10 minutes from time Adam Brown almost sealed the win as he rounded the goalkeeper struck the ball towards goal but was denied by the elements as the shot got stuck in the mud on the goal line and with Ashton claiming it has crossed the line the defence cleared the danger and the ref waved play on.
Into added time Formby attacked again but great defence was folllowe3d by another swift break and this time a cross from new signing Wez Patterson was banged into the net by Connor Callian securing a hard fought 2-0 for the Ashton lads which means that they leapfrog their opponents today, into the second league spot and just one point behind leaders Appley Bridge FC.
Ashton’s management were delighted with the result, “a hard working performance in very bad conditions and another clean sheet - well done lads”.
