Garstang 1 Ashton Athletic 1 - Sat 2nd Nov 3 pm

Match Report: North West Counties Division One North – November 2, 2024

Ashton Athletic’s trip to Garstang ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw, leaving the visitors frustrated after a performance that deserved more than a single point. From the opening whistle, Ashton were the dominant side, controlling possession and creating chances, but luck wasn’t on their side as they struggled to find the finishing touch.

Despite Ashton’s control, Garstang took the lead from a well-executed free-kick, in the 29th minute, a goal that even the most devoted Ashton fans would admit was a piece of set-piece quality. Ashton’s Jamie Nicholson equalised right on half time with a well-taken goal, another moment of quality that showcased his skill and precision.

In the second half, The Yellows were relentless in their pursuit of a winner. Dek Hill went agonizingly close, hitting the post, while Jack Smith narrowly missed the target with a powerful shot. In defence, the backline of Calum Wilson, Joe White, Nathan Whalley, and Zach Conway stood firm, displaying a disciplined and cohesive effort that kept Garstang’s attack at bay.

Nathan Beca shone as the standout player, showing his impact across the pitch. New signing Benjamin Mullarkey made a promising appearance, adding depth to the squad, and Niall Partridge completed the full 90 minutes, showcasing his growing confidence.

In the end, it was a performance that deserved all three points, but Ashton will be left ruing their missed chances as they prepare for the next challenge away at Steeton on Saturday.

Match Preview: North West Counties Division One North

Ashton Athletic head north to face Garstang FC in Lancashire this Saturday, aiming to secure three crucial points in their push to regain a playoff position in the North West Counties Division One North table. This marks the first meeting of the season between these two sides, and with both clubs hungry for success, it promises to be a compelling encounter.

Garstang currently sit in 16th position, only two places off the bottom, with a challenging start to their season leaving them on 11 points. However, confidence is rising after a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Thornton Cleveleys last weekend. Ashton will need to stay alert, as Garstang will be keen to carry their momentum forward on home turf.

For Ashton Athletic, the past weeks have been bittersweet. A 2-1 defeat to Maine Road was followed by a dramatic 2-2 draw at Daisy Hill, where Nathan Beca’s 96th-minute equalizer salvaged a point. After an impressive run of eight consecutive wins earlier in the season, Ashton have dropped to 7th in the league, just outside the playoff positions. They’ll be eager to avoid further stumbles and regain their stride.

The Yellows’ resilience in the second half against Daisy Hill showcased their depth and determination, setting high hopes for a strong start this Saturday. Kick-off is at 3:00 pm, and Ashton’s travelling supporters are sure to add to the atmosphere. Don’t miss what’s set to be an exciting afternoon of non-league action!
