Match Report: North West Counties Division One North | Saturday, February 15, 2025 | Brocstedes Park
Ashton Athletic faced a daunting challenge as they welcomed league leaders Nelson to Brocstedes Park, and while the 3-1 scoreline suggests a comfortable victory for the visitors, the reality was far more competitive. The Yellows delivered a spirited performance and, on another day, the result could have been very different.
Lightning Start Sets the Tone
The worst possible start saw Ashton fall behind inside just four minutes, as a defensive mistake was ruthlessly punished by Nelson. But rather than crumble, Ashton responded with resilience, regrouping quickly and taking the game to the table-toppers.
That response was rewarded in the 14th minute, as captain Josh Nicholson drove forward with intent, playing a superb pass into the path of in-form striker Dek Hill, who made no mistake in slotting home to bring Ashton level.
However, the celebrations were short-lived. Just a minute later, Nelson were awarded a penalty, and Charlie Frost stepped up to restore the visitors’ lead. The setback did little to deter Ashton, who continued to battle fiercely, ensuring Nelson didn’t have it all their own way as the first half ended 2-1.
A Hard-Fought Second Half
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Ashton pushing for an equaliser and showing plenty of attacking intent. At times, the league leaders looked rattled, as the hosts matched them stride for stride.
Yet, with 19 minutes remaining, Nelson’s talisman Charlie Frost struck again, completing his hat-trick and ultimately putting the game beyond Ashton’s reach.
Positives to Build On
Despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. Joe White, recently named North West Counties Player of the Month, delivered another commanding display, while right-back Conal Larkin was outstanding, earning Ashton’s Player of the Match.
A Performance to Build On
While Nelson ultimately showed why they are top of the table, Ashton’s determination, work rate, and quality in spells proved they can compete with the best. The focus now shifts to bouncing back in their next fixture and turning performances into points.

Match Preview: North West Counties Division One North | Saturday, February 15, 2025 | 2:00 PM Kick-Off |
League leaders Nelson roll into Brocstedes Park this Saturday in what promises to be a thrilling encounter, as Ashton Athletic look to upset the odds and secure a much-needed victory.
Nelson have been in imperious form this season, sitting comfortably at the summit of the North West Counties Division One North with 61 points from 27 games. Their recent form is nothing short of ruthless—five wins from their last six matches, scoring over 20 goals in the process. They lead the form table and are showing no signs of slowing down as they charge towards promotion.
For Ashton Athletic, this presents a formidable challenge, but football has a habit of delivering surprises. The Yellows currently sit 12th in the table with 35 points from 25 games and are eager to turn their fortunes around. Encouraging performances in recent weeks—despite mixed results—have shown the squad’s resilience, and with key players returning from injury, there is belief within the camp that they can cause an upset.
A Chance to Make a Statement
Ashton’s management will be demanding a response from their players, knowing that a victory over the league leaders could spark momentum heading into the crucial final stretch of the season. While Nelson’s attacking prowess is a major threat, The Yellows have shown they can compete with any side on their day.
