Season Closes with Narrow Defeat to Promotion Chasers
The curtain came down on Ashton Athletic’s 2024/25 campaign at a sunny Brocstedes Park on Saturday, but unfortunately, it wasn't quite the thriller many had hoped for in the final act. After December’s pulsating 4–4 draw between these two sides, there was hope for another goal-filled encounter, but it proved to be a more subdued affair.
With Euxton Villa already safely into the play-offs and Ashton settled in mid-table, the match carried an air of the end-of-season lull, with both teams playing with freedom but not quite the urgency of high-stakes football.
Despite the lack of drama, there were glimpses of quality throughout, and the only goal of the game arrived two minutes before the half-time whistle. Euxton’s sharp No.9, Rajwinder Upaal, adding another goal to his impressive season tally and proving why he’s such a dangerous presence in the final third.
In the second half, Ashton showed real intent to level the scores, with spells of pressure and attacking play that tested the visitors’ defence. But Euxton stood firm, showcasing the solidity and discipline that has seen them clinch a top-five finish.
Ashton keeper Joe Beswick once again impressed, pulling off a string of fine saves to keep the Yellows in contention and denying Euxton the chance to put the game to bed.
One of the biggest positives of the day for Ashton was the performance of Jamie Nicholson, continuing his comeback from injury. Full of composure, clever movement, and determined challenges, he earned himself a well-deserved Player of the Match accolade and offered real hope for what’s to come next season.
A Season of Lessons and Promise

The Match Programme can be viewed HERE
The curtain comes down on Ashton Athletic’s 2024/25 season this Saturday as they welcome local rivals Euxton Villa to Brocstedes Park for what promises to be a fitting finale to a rollercoaster campaign.
While The Yellows will be aiming to finish the season on a high, Euxton Villa arrive full of confidence, having already secured a place in the end-of-season play-offs thanks to an impressive 2–1 away win at Maghull last weekend. That result cemented Villa’s position in 5th place on 65 points from 33 games—a fine achievement for the visitors who have been a consistent force throughout the campaign.
As the dust settles on the league standings, congratulations are also due to Atherton Laburnum Rovers, who have been crowned champions and will make the leap to the Premier Division next season. A fantastic effort from them.
An Unforgettable First Encounter
The last time Ashton and Euxton locked horns, fans were treated to a pulsating 4–4 draw at the Jim Fowler Memorial Ground—an instant classic. Ashton were just minutes away from a memorable victory, only to be denied by late heartbreak, as Euxton struck twice in the 89th and 96th minutes to snatch a point in dramatic fashion.
If Saturday’s clash is anything like that previous encounter, supporters could be in for a thrilling afternoon of end-to-end football.
A Perfect Day for Football
The forecast is looking ideal, with sunshine expected over Brocstedes Park—setting the stage for a fantastic day out. Gates open at 1:15 PM, and the bar and kitchen will be serving from 1:30 PM, offering the perfect chance to enjoy a pint and a bite in one of the most scenic settings in non-league football.

As the season draws to a close, everyone at Ashton Athletic would like to extend heartfelt thanks to our loyal supporters. Through highs and lows, your passion and presence have meant the world to the club, and we hope to see you one last time this season, cheering on the lads in yellow.
Let’s finish strong.
