Maghull 2 Ashton Athletic 1 - Sat 30th Nov

Match Report: North West Counties Division One – Saturday, November 30, 2024

Ashton Athletic were unable to replicate their midweek heroics, falling to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Maghull at Old Hall Field. In a game defined by early setbacks and second-half drama, the visitors were left ruing missed opportunities and questionable officiating.

The game began brightly for Ashton, but Maghull took control with two quick-fire goals in the 17th and 19th minutes. The first came from a well-taken free kick that left goalkeeper Joe Beswick stranded. Moments later, Maghull capitalised on a swift counterattack, doubling their lead. Ashton struggled to regain composure, failing to register any significant attempts on goal before the break.

The second half, however, saw a much-improved Ashton side. With captain Josh Nicholson driving the team forward, the visitors dominated possession and created sustained pressure. Defenders Calum Wilson and Conal Larkin were resolute, while substitutes Josh High and Nathan Beca added fresh impetus to the attack.

Beca’s blistering pace proved pivotal in the 81st minute. Breaking free from Maghull’s defence, he unselfishly squared the ball for High, who tapped in to halve the deficit. Ashton piled on the pressure in search of an equalizer, but Maghull’s persistent time-wasting and the referee’s reluctance to intervene frustrated the visitors.

Despite their best efforts, Ashton fell short and will look to bounce back in next Saturday’s 2 pm home clash with Holker Old Boys.

Key Performers:
Josh Nicholson: Inspirational as captain, leading from midfield.
Calum Wilson & Conal Larkin: Defensive standouts, keeping Maghull at bay in the second half.
Nathan Beca: A game-changer off the bench, providing the assist for Ashton’s goal.

The team will take positives from their second-half performance as they aim to return to winning ways.

Match Preview: North West Counties First Division North

Ashton Athletic head to Merseyside this Saturday for a crucial clash with Maghull at the DT Hughes Community Stadium. Fresh off the back of a scintillating 6-0 triumph over league leaders Atherton Laburnum Rovers in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy, confidence will be soaring in the Ashton camp. Manager Jay Foulds will be urging his side to replicate their cup heroics and secure a much-needed three points in the league.

Despite their cup success, Ashton’s league form has been inconsistent of late, managing just two points from their last four outings. Currently sitting in 9th position, they are four points adrift of the play-off spots and eager to close that gap. With momentum on their side, this match offers a perfect opportunity to reignite their league campaign.

Maghull, on the other hand, have endured a tough spell, picking up just one win in their last six matches. However, a hard-fought 3-2 home victory over Burscough in their most recent fixture will give the hosts belief that they can cause problems for Ashton.

Kick-off is at 3pm, and with the weather set fair, fans can expect an entertaining contest. Follow our social media channels for live updates. We hope to see you there to cheer the team on!
